Clones

Clones of BeOS

Haiku OS

Haiku is an open source operating system currently in development designed from the ground up for desktop computing. Inspired by the Be Operating System, Haiku aims to provide users of all levels with a personal computing experience that is simple yet powerful, and void of any unnecessary complexities.

Haiku is developed mostly by volunteers around the world in their spare time. Besides the project admins and core members, Haiku also exists thanks to the dedicated support of a fervent and friendly community, and that of Haiku Inc., a non-profit founded by project leader Michael Phipps with the purpose of supporting the development of Haiku.

Zeta OS

Magnussoft ZETA, previously yellowTAB ZETA, was an operating system formerly developed by yellowTAB of Germany based on the BeOS operating system developed by Be Inc.; because of yellowTAB's insolvency, ZETA was later being developed by an independent team of which little was known, and distributed by magnussoft. As of February 28, 2007 the current version of ZETA is 1.5. On March 28, 2007, magnussoft announced that it has discontinued funding the development of ZETA by March 16, because the sales figures had fallen far short of the company's expectations, so that the project was no longer economically viable.[1] A few days later, the company also stopped the distribution of ZETA in reaction to allegations that ZETA constituted a pirated copy of BeOS.

Mockup

Mockup was created by Pier Luigi Fiorini. The purpose was to create the BeOS GUI using QT. It was to have a unique look and feel using Qt 4.x with support for OpenGL, pixel-based graphics, vector-based graphics and a powerful model-view architecture.

Mockup came as far as version 0.2.0 Alpha 1.1 but after that it's website has been down.

Blue Eyed OS

Blue Eyed OS, also called B.E OS, was an attempt to write a BeOS compatible operating system with the Linux kernel as its base. For the GUI it used X.org, as many other operating systems do. The purpose was to have a BeOS compatible API.

In 2005 Blue Eyed OS vanished and merged into Haiku OS.

Zebuntu

More or less a Linux distribution, Zebuntu uses the Desktop Environment XFCE on top of the Ubuntu Linux operating system. It's BeOS inspired theme looks intriguing, but the true power of this OS will be it's abiblity to load BeOS binaries natively. For this it uses parts of Blue Eyed OS, and it's also going to have support for the Be File System.
